I bought this as I am trying to begin once more to learn the bagpipes after a 15 year gap, and the Blair Digital Chanter is a great practice chanter that makes it easy and enjoyable to practice. I am very impressed with the full instrument sounds as well, a premium product worth the price. The chanter sounds great with a variety of different instrument options free to download, although the three built-in instruments sound great too. It's very convenient to be able to practice quietly using headphones, but I am also very pleased with being able to plug it into a speaker with the full instrument sounds. It is intriguing that it can serve as a MIDI device, and it worked well with Garage Band. The battery life is sufficient for at least a week of use; it was not low when I charged it out of prudence. I finally tried the cut-off accessory, and it is convenient as compared to navigating the device menu to turn off. I would recommend buying the cut-off as well, not necessary but convenient when playing around others. Iowa Bagpipe Supply had a competitive price and shipped promptly. I would recommend buying here.
Took a little bit to set the sensors to my fingers. But now it’s great. I am looking to add a speaker next.
The chanter is amazing. I stopped playing the full pipes about 10 years ago and wanted to get back into playing with an electronic set. The Blair Chanter is fantastic - sound quality is so close to real pipes and the effects (reverb, stereo pan, etc.) are just great. The finger sensor adjustments are also a fantastic feature as it let's me tune the chanter to my playing style. The best part - with this chanter I feel like I never stopped playing!
your service is awesome
Fantastic product. It exceeds expectations.
I bought this for practice. Once it's set up and you understand the settings, it allows me to practice for long periods of time repetitively without tiring. Plus it sounds great, and is a midi controller as well. Nice heft and very well made.
I absolutely love this chanter. I travel a lot for work and have difficulties practicing with me being in hotels a lot so I ordered this chancer to help enhance my practice and this item has not disappointed one bit. Besides an amazing chanter, the seller was super quick at filling my order and shipping.
I'm unable to comment on the Blair digital chanter yet as I only very recently got it, but what I can comment on is the care and dedication at Iowa Bagpipe Supply. It's nothing short of OUTSTANDING! My order was instantly processed, all emails immediately answered, and there's a great pride (and very well deserved) of providing nothing but the very best interaction and commitment to their customers. I've shopped many, but not anymore. Iowa Bagpipes Supply will always be my first go-to for my bagpipe wants!
I first saw the Blair chanter online and started lusting after it - I wasn't a big fan of the Fagerstrom or the Deger's looks or their lack of holes. I figured I'd buy the Blair it and give it a shot. The good: The meat of any instrument is: does it sound good? The Deger and Fagerstrom play sounds that mimic the GHB, but the Blair uses actual pre-recorded pipes for the notes. And OH it is glorious. With other electronic chanters there’s a sort of uncanny valley that let you know you’re listening to MIDI files. Not the Blair – this thing is a REAL instrument in its own right that can be performed with. It sounds just like a highland bagpipe, and even has the transition noises (the small, subtle sounds when you remove or put your finger on a hole) that the other electronic chanters lack. When combining these with the perfect reverb settings (which are PLENTIFUL) it adds up to a rich, mostly convincing tone that I wouldn’t be embarrassed to play in public. The additional pipes (especially the smallpipes) are GREAT. You can even cross-finger with these. The physical chanter itself screams “premium” – the weight is perfect, it begs to be touched, and it feels super durable. The ferrule and sole are made out of some kind of super strong super shiny metal that just feels heavy and is fingerprint and scratch resistant. The hardware is absolutely awesome. The OLED screen is REALLY nice. It gives you that inky black that seems to project the words directly onto the surface of the chanter rather than being a cheap screen. The holes make for much more natural playing than electronic touch-based sensors. You can learn to birl on this for real. They require some adjustment, but once adjusted, the holes allow for rapid playing or slow, exaggerated movements. What I wish could be improved: The lighting systems are sometimes finnicky and require pretty fine-tuned adjustments for perfect playing. This takes some getting used to at first but I'm starting to get used to it. I DO wish that they had presets beyond LOW MED and HI for the light levels. When I play, I usually start out pretty high-handed and then move to more nimble playing, so it would be nice to have a fast adaptation for that. I would like to be able to cut the drones out and just play with the pipe chanter with a single switch rather than reducing the volume of each drone. I also wish the battery level would be displayed on the chanter display. As it is, it either shows FULL or CHARGE. This would be helpful for monitoring the charge during use or charging. Overall, this thing is an amazing piece of kit. My piping skills have already massively improved a week after getting this – I just want to play it all the time!
